To apply for a biometric passport, personal presence is required, as well as the presence of a minor child if the application is being made on their behalf.

Required Documents for a Biometric Passport Application

Along with your application, you must submit the following original documents:

  • Identification document: biometric passport, personal ID card, or another public document that can verify your identity.
  • Certificate of Serbian citizenship (issued within the last year): Required when applying for the first biometric passport. For subsequent applications, a certificate is only necessary if personal details have changed. The certificate is usually obtained by the authorities, unless you specifically request to obtain it yourself.
  • Birth certificate: This document is also obtained by the authorities, unless you declare that you will provide it yourself.

For minors, regardless of their age, they must have their own passport. They cannot be included in the parent’s passport. In addition to the documents above, both parents must be present during the application process. If one parent cannot be present, a notarized consent form from the absent parent is required. Consent can also be provided electronically via the eConsulate portal.

Processing Time for Passport Application Abroad

The legal deadline for processing a passport application made abroad is 60 days.

Who Cannot Apply for a Biometric Passport Abroad

The Serbian diplomatic and consular missions are unable to accept applications for biometric passports from:

  • Newborn children abroad before their birth registration is completed in the Serbian birth register, and when their place of residence and JMBG (unique identification number) have been assigned.
  • Individuals who marry before foreign authorities and seek a passport for a name change, until that name change is recorded in the Serbian registers.

Receiving Your Biometric Passport

Passports are produced in Serbia. Once your biometric passport is ready, you will receive a notification to collect it at the Serbian diplomatic or consular mission where you submitted your application. Alternatively, you can authorize someone to pick up the passport on your behalf.

Lost Passport Abroad

If you lose your travel document abroad, report the loss to the local police in the country you are in and request a certificate of loss. With this certificate, you should contact the nearest Serbian mission, where they will conduct an identity and citizenship verification procedure and issue a travel document for your return to Serbia.
