A visa is permission for entry and stay on the territory of the Republic of Slovenia. There are several types of visas:

  1. Visa A, also known as the Airport Transit Visa, is required for travelers who need to transit through the international zone of Slovenian airports on route to their final destination in a non-Schengen country. This visa allows travelers to remain in the international zone of the airport without entering the Schengen Area and it is typically valid for a short duration, usually up to 24 or 48 hours.
  2. Visa C (Short-Stay Schengen Visa) , commonly referred to as the Short-Stay Schengen Visa, is the most common type of visa for travelers visiting Slovenia for short stays, typically up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This visa allows travelers to enter and stay in Slovenia for purposes such as tourism, business, family visits, or participating in short-term educational or cultural programs. Visa C also grants entry to other Schengen member states.The application for Visa C is usually processed through the embassy or consulate of the Schengen country the traveler intends to visit first or where they will spend the most time.
  3. Visa D, also known as the National Visa or Long-Stay Visa, is required for travelers planning to stay in Slovenia for longer than 90 days, typically for purposes such as work, study, family reunification, or long-term residency

A long-term residence visa is issued for the duration of the intended stay of a foreigner in the Republic of Slovenia, which is longer than 90 days but not exceeding one year. The foreigner must obtain a long-term residence visa before entering the Republic of Slovenia. The long-term residence visa enables the foreigner to enter and reside in the Republic of Slovenia for the duration of the visa’s validity.

A long-term residence visa may be issued to a foreigner:

  1. Who is a family member of a European Union citizen and a foreigner who is a family member of a Slovenian citizen and intends to reside in the Republic of Slovenia for family reunification with a European Union citizen or a Slovenian citizen, if a visa is required for entry into the Republic of Slovenia. 
  2. Who holds a diplomatic or official passport and intends to reside in the Republic of Slovenia to perform duties in a diplomatic mission or consulate of another state or international organization with headquarters in the Republic of Slovenia, and his family.
  3. Due to participation in or attendance at a course or other similar forms of education or training, for which a residence permit for studying is not required for the foreigner, if the course or other similar forms of education or training last for at least 20 hours per month and if the foreigner submits a confirmation of enrollment in the course or other similar forms of education and a confirmation of payment, if the course or other similar forms of education are charged for.
  4. Due to the existence of economic interest in the Republic of Slovenia, which the foreigner proves with the opinion of the competent ministry.
  5. Who is a university lecturer, university associate, or researcher due to the interest of the Republic of Slovenia in the field of education or science, which the foreigner proves with the opinion of the competent ministry.
  6. Who is an artist or cultural worker, due to the interest of the Republic of Slovenia in the field of culture, which the foreigner demonstrates with the opinion of the competent ministry.
  7. Who is a sports coach, professional athlete, or private sports worker and who has a training contract, employment contract, or employment contract with a club or sports organization based in the Republic of Slovenia.
  8. Who is accredited in the Republic of Slovenia as a correspondent for foreign media or as a foreign correspondent.
  9. Who will perform a clerical profession or religious activity in the Republic of Slovenia within a registered religious community and a foreigner who will organize or lead charitable and humanitarian activities within a recognized humanitarian organization or registered religious community.

A long-term residence visa is issued at the request of the foreigner. The request may be submitted to the competent authority no later than three months before the intended arrival of the foreigner in the Republic of Slovenia. The form for issuing a long-term residence visa is determined by the minister responsible for foreign affairs. A foreigner who wishes to enter and stay in the Republic of Slovenia with a long-term residence visa must have:

  1. A valid travel document, the validity of which is at least three months longer than the intended stay in the Republic of Slovenia;
  2. Travel health insurance;
  3. Sufficient means of subsistence;
  4.  The purpose of stay in Republic of Slovenia;
  5. The guarantor who invites the foreigner for a private or business visit must write a guarantee letter to the foreigner. With the guarantee letter, the guarantor guarantees that he will provide accommodation for the foreigner or cover the costs of his stay in the Republic of Slovenia and the costs of returning to his home country. The guarantor also guarantees to cover any costs of the foreigner's stay in the foreigners' center as well as any costs of removing the foreigner from the country.

A long-term residence visa is not issued to a foreigner if:

  1. The conditions are not met;
  2. There are reasons to believe that the foreigner will not stay in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia;
  3. The foreigner has been subjected to a measure prohibiting entry into the country;
  4. The foreigner does not appear personally to the competent authority upon invitation;
  5. There are reasons to believe that the foreigner will not voluntarily leave the Republic of Slovenia after the expiration of the long-term residence visa;
  6. There are reasons to suspect that the foreigner may pose a threat to public order and safety or international relations of the Republic of Slovenia, or there is suspicion that his stay in the country will be associated with the implementation of terrorist acts or other acts of violence, illegal intelligence activities, production or trafficking of drugs, or drug use, other criminal offenses;
  7. There are reasons to believe that the foreigner will not comply with the legal order of the Republic of Slovenia;
  8. There are serious reasons to believe that the foreigner may be a victim of human trafficking during his stay in the Republic of Slovenia;
  9. In the process of issuing a long-term residence visa, it is established that he comes from areas where infectious diseases with the possibility of an epidemic are spreading, as stated in the international health regulations of the World Health Organization, or from areas where infectious diseases that could endanger human health are spreading and for which, in accordance with the law governing infectious diseases, it is necessary to take prescribed measures;
  10. A negative opinion of the police is given;
  11. It is obvious that marriage, partnership, or partnership is concluded or registered primarily for the purpose of obtaining a long-term residence visa;
  12. The foreigner actually already lives in the Republic of Slovenia;
  13. If it is found that any of the evidence of meeting the conditions for issuing a long-term residence visa has been altered or falsified;
  14. The foreigner intentionally provided false information about his identity or other inaccurate information or deliberately concealed circumstances relevant to the issuance of a long-term residence visa.

A long-term residence visa is revoked if:

  1. It is found that the foreigner does not meet the conditions for issuing a visa or that there are reasons for refusal to issue it;
  2. The foreigner intentionally provided false information about his identity or other inaccurate information, or intentionally concealed circumstances relevant to the issuance of the visa;
  3. The foreigner is subject to collateral sanction of expulsion from the country.

A long-term residence visa expires if:

  1. The validity period expires or if it is revoked;
  2. The foreigner's stay is refused;
  3. If the foreigner is subject to a final secondary sentence or secondary sanction of expulsion from the country;
  4. If the foreigner loses the right of residence in the Republic of Slovenia due to legal consequences of a criminal conviction or if a final decision on deportation from another EU Member State is issued to the foreigner, which will result in his removal from the Republic of Slovenia;
  5. The foreigner acquires citizenship of the Republic of Slovenia;
  6. The foreigner obtains a residence permit;
  7. The foreigner dies.

Against the issuance, refusal to issue a visa, suspension of the visa issuance procedure, revocation of a visa, or cancellation of a visa or cancellation of an airport transit visa the foreigner may lodge an appeal within eight days from the date of delivery of the decision. The appeal is submitted in writing. The appeal against decisions of diplomatic missions or consulates is decided by the ministry responsible for foreign affairs. An appeal for which the administrative fee has not been paid is rejected by decision.
