A visa is permission for entry and stay on the territory of the Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are several types of visas:

  • Airport Transit Visa – The Government of the Bosnia and Herzegovina may specify that citizens of certain countries, if required for reasons of security of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its citizens, must have an airport transit visa, issued with a validity period of up to 6 months.
  • Visa C – Short-stay visa (tourist visa) is permission for entry into Bosnia and Herzegovina, transit through the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, or stay on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina for up to 90 days within any period of 180 days, counting from the date of first entry.
  • Visa D – Long-stay visa is permission for entry and stay on the territory of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina for a period of 90 to 180 days.

The Long-term Residence Visa (Visa D) allows a foreigner to enter and reside in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a period of 180 days within one year and enables the foreigner to apply for temporary residence approval in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Long-term Residence Visa is issued with a validity period of up to one year and is issued for one or more entries into Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Long-term Residence Visa is exceptionally issued in situations where a stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina longer than 90 days within a period of 180 days is required. If the Long-term Residence Visa is issued for the purpose of applying for temporary residence approval in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the visa validity period may be shorter than 90 days.

For the issuance of short stay residence visa (Visa C), the applicant is required to, in addition to proof of travel health insurance covering expenses that may arise in connection with return to the country of origin due to health reasons, emergency medical assistance, or emergency hospital treatment or death during his/her stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina, submit evidence justifying the purpose and conditions of the intended stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina, namely:

  1. an invitation letter (a letter inviting the foreigner to come to Bosnia and Herzegovina for a specific purpose within a specific period of time);
  2. a copy of proof of paid tourist travel, including accommodation and transportation, or proof of organized travel or paid accommodation;
  3. document based on which the purpose and conditions of the intended stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be reasonably inferred, if possible and necessary.

The applicant for the issuance of a Visa D is obliged to provide personal data and biometric data (photograph, fingerprint, signature) as required, as well as other necessary information related to the purpose of entry into Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Visa D may be granted to a foreigner intending to stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the following reasons:

  1. Family reunification,
  2. Education,
  3. Humanitarian reasons,
  4. Employment with a work permit,
  5. Employment without a work permit, or
  6. Other justified reasons.

The visa is issued by the diplomatic-consular representation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it can also be issued by the diplomatic-consular representation of another state with which Bosnia and Herzegovina has concluded an agreement.

The diplomatic-consular mission may decide on the visa application in one of the following ways:

  1. Grant the visa application – the diplomatic-consular mission will grant the application if it finds that all substantive requirements for visa issuance are met. The validity period and duration of stay stated in the visa must not be exceeded, and it may be extended only for professional reasons or force majeure at the request of the foreigner. The visa is extended by affixing a visa sticker to the foreigner's passport, and the total period of the foreigner's stay in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina based on the previously issued visa sticker and the period of stay based on the visa sticker issued under this article cannot exceed 90 days in case of visa C or 180 days in case of visa D.
  2. Reject the visa application – if the conditions for visa issuance are not met or if it is determined that the foreigner poses a security risk to the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  3. Cancel the visa – the diplomatic-consular mission will cancel the visa if it determines that the conditions for its issuance were not met at the time of application.
  4. Revoke the visa – the diplomatic-consular mission will revoke the visa if it subsequently determines that the conditions existing at the time of its issuance no longer apply.
